Following consultation by the General Optical Council (‘the GOC’) on their new standards last year, they have published additional guidance on 27th April 2017 with regard to obtaining valid consent from patients. This guidance aims to assist registrants in meeting the Standards of Practice for Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians and Standards for Optical Students.

The guidance deals with the principles of consent, explaining the types of consent, explicit and implicit, which can be provided by patients. It also provides guidance on how to obtain valid consent, assessing a patient’s capacity to consent, a patient’s ability to refuse or withdraw consent, obtaining the consent of a patient to share their information and, finally, obtaining (or not) consent in an emergency situation.

For full details regarding the consent guidance, please go to: https://www.optical.org/en/Standards/consent-guidance/consent-guidance-contents.cfm. For further information regarding issues pertaining to consent, please contact the Healthcare Team at Carson McDowell LLP.
