Construction



  • University of Ulster

    Advising the University on a range of contentious and non-contentious construction matters, including substantial arbitration proceedings in relation to time and cost overruns on a project involving both new build and refurbishment to create new facilities for the University and multi-party High Court proceedings in relation to claims relating to structural defects in another University building, resulting in a partial collapse of the building.  Also advising the University in relation to updating a number of its standard form construction contracts.  Carson McDowell construction partner, Stuart Murphy, assisted by solicitor John Dugdale, have been advising the University on its construction matters.

  • Scottish Provident Building
    The Scottish Provident Building occupies a landmark position in the centre of Belfast.  Carson McDowell acted for the Building owners and landlords in connection with the lease of five floors taken by Your Space PLC and the extensive fit out works carried out by Your Space to prepare the Building for the 130 serviced offices, meeting rooms and other facilities which Your Space are to offer from the Building.  Rosemary Carson, a partner in the firm's commercial property department advised the Building owners on the property related aspects of the deal and Stuart Murphy,, a partner in the construction department, advised on the construction aspects of the fit out works.

  • Apex Procurement (Northern Ireland) Limited
    Advising one of the procurement consortia (made up of ten NI housing associations) set up in accordance with the government's Procurement Strategy for the Social Housing Development Programme on its procurement of a framework for Architect-led Design Teams.  Catherine Thompson, associate in Carson McDowell's procurement team gave the lead advice on this matter, with Stuart Murphy, construction partner, advising on the construction aspects of the framework and the proposed future call-off contracts.

  • Titanic Signature Project

    Carson McDowell, on behalf of long-standing client the Belfast Harbour Commissioners, has acted on the major development of the Titanic Signature Project, which is to form a central part of the re-development of the Titanic Quarter, on land owned by the Belfast Harbour Commissioners.  The Titanic Signature Project is scheduled to be complete by 2012 in time for the centenary of the sinking of the Titanic.  The new building will house the "Titanic Experience" exhibition, a "Flying Theatre" which will give visitors a birds eye view across Northern Ireland, a Titanic-themed banqueting suite and a community arts facility for local exhibitions, performances and conferences.  The Project will also include the restoration of the Titanic and Olympic slipways and the Thompson Dock.  The Belfast Harbour Commissioners were advised by Alan Reilly and Stuart Murphy, partners in the commercial property and construction departments respectively.

  • Decathlon Sports

    Carson McDowell advised sports retailer Decathlon Sports, part of the Oxylane Group, on the agreement for its first store in Northern Ireland at Holywood Exchange.  The unit, totalling approximately 41,000 square feet, is in the process of being refurbished by landlords Axa with a view to the store opening in June 2010.
