Carson McDowell’s Health and Safety Team Hosts Asbestos Risk Briefing.

10 April 2014

Practice Area: Health and Safety

The Health and Safety Team at Carson McDowell recently hosted a breakfast briefing event titled ‘Asbestos Risk in the 21st Century’.

The briefing, which was attended by Health and Safety managers from both the private and public sectors, was hosted by Ashleigh Birkett, Associate in the firm’s Health and Safety Team. Ashleigh was joined by guest speaker, Professor Roger Willey, an internationally renowned Consultant who specialises in asbestos risk and management.

At the event, Professor Willey spoke about the risks associated with asbestos; the doubling of asbestos-related deaths in recent years; legal duties to manage asbestos; and categories of asbestos removal/remediation works.

Ashleigh Birkett then delivered a talk which focused on local asbestos-related prosecutions that have been brought in recent years by HSENI.

Speaking about the event, Ashleigh said:

"It is quite shocking to see that the UK asbestos-related death rate is predicted to rise so sharply over the next decade.  The deaths are reportedly occurring in tradesmen, primarily; therefore, duty holders should ensure they are fully aware of their legal obligations and that the correct information is passed to tradesmen before asbestos is disturbed.  There are recent examples, in this jurisdiction, of prosecutions being brought for asbestos-related breaches and it is evident that the Courts are willing to impose significant penalties on corporates and individuals who fail to comply with the law."

Since her qualification in 2005, Ashleigh Birkett has specialised in health and safety law and compliance. She presents regularly on a range of health and safety related topics. If you have any questions about the topic covered in the recent briefing, or any other Health and Safety Law queries, please contact Ashleigh.
